For well over a decade, Sheila Rubin and Bret Lyon have been leaders in the effort to educate and bring practical awareness and shame training to as many practitioners around the world as possible.

Shame, Transformance and AEDP

Presented by
Bret Lyon, PhD, SEP and
Sheila Rubin, MA, LMFT, RDT/BCT

Shame is one of the most painful emotions and is often at the root of the inner critic and perfectionism. It can bind with other emotions, such as anger and fear, making it difficult to detect. Additionally, revealing shame can be inherently shameful. For many clients who do not improve in therapy, unacknowledged and unresolved shame may be the primary factor.

In this workshop, you will learn to:

  • Identify and counteract implicit shame in therapy.

  • Help clients distinguish shame from other emotions.

  • Navigate shame defenses such as over-verbalization, dissociation, and freezing.

  • Differentiate between healthy and toxic shame.

  • Guide clients out of shame, enabling them to direct their energy outward rather than against themselves.

Please note that Bret and Sheila’s cutting-edge work on shame is highly congruent with AEDP but they do not explicitly teach AEDP. Read what Diana Fosha has to say about their work below.

Diana Fosha on Bret and Sheila’s new book
‘Embracing Shame: How to Stop Resisting Shame and Turn It Into a Powerful Ally.’

“Expect to learn, expect to have ‘aha’ moments, expect to be moved, expect to be transformed. Not only do Bret and Sheila explain and teach with clarity what shame is, how it affects body and psyche, and what to do when it overtakes us, but with skill, compassion, and bravery they model for us the transforming power of vulnerability and transparency.”
